The Tempe Police Department is now accepting applications for the Citizen's Police Academy, meeting every Tuesday night from 6 - 9 p.m. August 5th, 2008 - October 28th, 2008. The classes will be held at a variety of locations throughout the semester with the first one meeting at the Main Tempe Police Station, 120 E. 5th Street. A complete Academy schedule with classes, instructors, and locations will be sent out to students in July of 2008. There is no charge to participate in the Citizen’s Police Academy and the classes are open to valley residents over the age of 18. (14 to 17 year olds require an accompanying adult or guardian). The thirteen-week program provides citizens with an in-depth examination of the rigors and responsibilities facing Tempe police officers. Academy attendees will participate in several "hands-on" exercises such as going on a ride along with officers, learning about and using firearms on our shooting range, riding in one of our patrol vehicles in a tactical driving class, witnessing a K-9 demonstration, and being given the opportunity to experience the "stopping power" of one of our Department-issued Tasers. Instruction also will be provided on topics such as traffic law, criminal law and search and seizure. People interested in attending the Citizen's Police Academy must complete an application, which is available to print out above or at the Tempe Police Department lobby, 120 E. Fifth Street. Applications must have been submitted by June 27th, 2008. Because class size is limited, applying early is recommended. For more information, contact Brandon Banks at 480-350-8856.
