Finding rainfall totals

Some weather, huh? At least it's not boring.

My original dog doesn't seem to pay any attention to the storms, but the second dog freaks. She has to be drugged and wrapped in a blanket and sung to. The Whiffenpoof song seems to help.

So anyway, she is pretty much walking around stoned these days.

OK, you know how the official rainfall totals come from the National Weather Service's gauge at Sky Harbor? A lot of you people like to complain about that. I don't know why.

However, you can easily find rainfall totals for your neighborhood or at least for your general area. Go to www.wrh.noaa.gov/psr/ and on the left side of the page click on "Local Forecasts." Then scroll down to "Real-time Rainfall Totals for Phoenix."

It's a list of 58 of the weather service's remote monitoring stations located all around the Valley. You should be able to find one fairly close to you and find out how much you got.

I say a brand new Phoenix Metro bus costs around $750,000 to $1 million. My wife says they are more like $250,000. We're both just guessing. How much does a bus cost? According to story by colleague Jahna Berry, which ran in The Republic June 9, a new bus can cost as much as $750,000.

My 8-year-old asked me this on a recent camping trip: When a fire burns out, where does it go? Help, please.

Where does it go? It doesn't go anywhere. It just isn't anymore.

A fire is a chemical reaction between, say, a log and the oxygen in the air. The log burns when your match heats it enough to start the chemical reaction between the carbon in the wood and oxygen. Then it throws off a gas – the flames - that produce heat and light.

The fire burns until there is no more fuel or until you douse it with water, thus cooling the wood below is combustion temperature or until you deprive it of oxygen by covering it with dirt.

So it doesn't go anyplace. It just isn't there anymore.
